Behind every creation and every product you encounter, there is a hand story.
At Keyo, we love hands. Hands not only make us human but they also contain our identity. This week we have an interview from Kimone Young, a Jewelry Designer from Brooklyn, New York.
Check out her story below.
How did you get started?
I'm a self-taught jewelry designer. I started by making jewelry for myself as a hobby, and pretty soon people started asking me about them. I worked for some jewelry designers for a while and used Youtube a lot when I struggled with some techniques. I was always a huge fan of statement jewelry and loved the way they can turn a simple outfit into something really special.
What do you love most about doing what you do?
I love seeing how my jewelry makes people feel. Seeing the reactions from other people regarding my work is priceless. That's what keeps me going and excited about creating. My pieces make me feel good, and if I could make even a few people feel just as good wearing them, then that's rewarding.
How do you mentally prepare to do what you do before you have to do it?
Before I get into work mode, I need a calm environment. So I'll burn sage sometimes, light a candle or both. I'm also listening to music that inspires a certain mood I'm in. There are times when I'm feeling completely uninspired, and I won't create. When I force myself to sit at my work table, I get horrible results.
What are some of your tips for other people to follow your path?
Do what makes you happy. Don't get consumed by what other people are doing and how they are doing it. Also, stay true to yourself. If you're not into trends, don't follow them. When you do something that you believe in, other people feel that and it's more genuine.
Any favorite books, songs, podcasts, shows?
I read "Girlboss" by Sophia Amoruso and "You are a Badass" by Jen Sincero at a time when I needed a boost of courage. They were a great help at that moment. I'm currently loving "Becoming" by Michelle Obama.
My all-time favorite podcast is by Myleik Teele. So inspiring.
What's identity to you?
Knowing who you are and identifying with what resonates in your heart and mind.
Identifying with what resonates in your heart and mind.
