Behind every creation and every product you encounter, there is a hand story.
At Keyo, we love hands. Hands not only make us human but they also contain our identity. This week we have an interview from, Mary Nguyen a Structural Engineer at NASA MSFC in Huntsville.
Check out her story below.
What do you do?
I am currently a Structural Engineer at NASA MSFC (Marshall Space Flight Center). On a daily basis, I analyze the internal stresses for NASA's Special Test Equipment to ensure it passes safety standards. Our overall mission is, of course, to make sure that astronauts safely get to outer space and back, which makes my contribution feel magnanimous. Since being at NASA, I've also worked on Thermal Analysis for materials science research on the International Space Station (ISS), designing solid rocket motors and rocket propellant formulation.
How did you get started?
It all started back when I initially obtained a two-year degree in Business. I decided that I wanted to switch paths to advance my critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Thus, I started exploring Engineering. The field seemed super interesting to me, and I was excited to bring my creativity to the table.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
My inspiration comes from but is not limited to, other men and women in the field, and opportunities in the area itself. Someone once said that some of the best Scientists and Engineers are dreamers, inventors, and builders. Many role models have not only contributed to history but have also changed it. In general, I look up to those who have limitless aspirations, regardless of the industry. I am inspired by those who have world-changing ideas and aren't afraid to act on them.
What are some of your tips for other people to follow your path?
My tip for those who are on a similar path or wish to be is to dream big and take the necessary steps in achieving it. Imagine your higher self and purpose, and show up every single day as that person.
Any favorite books, songs, podcasts, shows?
Two of my current favorite reads are "You are a Badass" by Jen Sincero and "The Sun and Her Flowers" by Rupi Kaur. I enjoy reading motivational, self-help, and beautiful poetry books. It helps me get in touch with the root of my personal challenges and move forward, which I think is imperative in professional growth. I'm a believer that if you lack in mental and spiritual health, it will also reflect in the quality of your work.
What's identity to you?
Identity to me is beyond just what I do or how society perceives me. It is not only my job title, background, or appearance. Rather, my identity is comprised of the things I value and am passionate about. It's the impact I want to create and the people I want to serve.
